Sarvam AI Funding History: From Startup to $1.5B Unicorn

Sarvam AI was founded in 2023 by AI researchers Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar with a mission to build India's own sovereign AI models and infrastructure.

Unlike many AI startups that focus only on applications, Sarvam set out to build the entire AI stack—from large language models and speech AI to enterprise AI solutions tailored for Indian languages and businesses.

The company's funding journey has been remarkably fast:

2023: Sarvam raised its seed funding from leading investors including Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners, helping the startup build its initial AI models and research capabilities.

2024–2025: The company continued expanding its AI infrastructure, enterprise products, and Indian-language models. During this period, Sarvam was selected under the IndiaAI Mission to develop India's sovereign large language model, significantly boosting investor confidence.

June 2026: Sarvam announced the first close of its Series B funding round, raising $234 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, officially joining India's unicorn club. The round was led by HCLTech, which invested $150 million for a 10.5% stake. Other investors included Bessemer Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Peak XV Partners.

In just three years, Sarvam transformed from a research-driven startup into India's newest AI unicorn, making it one of the fastest-growing AI companies in the country's history.

Why This Funding Round Matters

Sarvam's $234 million raise is not just another startup funding story. It signals growing confidence in India's ability to build homegrown AI technology rather than relying entirely on foreign AI platforms.

The fresh capital will be used to:

- Build next-generation AI models

- Expand computing infrastructure

- Hire world-class AI talent

- Develop enterprise AI products

- Strengthen India's sovereign AI ecosystem
