A question always in our mind while creating our first resume, is how to name a resume file.
Hello Candidates / Job Seekers / Fresher / College Students
Many of the resumes are attached with informal file names, creating a bit of a sorting puzzle for any hiring team. We understand that job hunting can be a hectic process, but a small adjustment can make a significant difference. Most of the hiring teams have been facing this concern for so long, better file format always plays a key role in getting calls from the hiring team during your job search. Your job search can be easy by adding small efforts to file format. Other points also matter like the subject, body and cover letter but that topic is covered in a separate blog for a better understanding.
When you question some time to yourself why you don't get a proper response from the HR team, there is one reason along with the email subject, body, and cover letter. Please look into below small tips added below to make your resume file name in a decent format.
Here is a quick tip on how to properly name your resume file:
Include Your Full Name with Specify the Position: Help us identify your application easily by including the name of the position you are applying for in the file name.
Right Way e.g.
1. MarketingSpecialist_JaneDoe_Resume.pdf
2. Android_Ashish_4_YoE.pdf (we recommend this format for resume file name, this naming is a bit long but relatable to pick the right resume quickly)
3. Salesforce_5_Years_Alex_Resume.pdf
4. Siya_DataAnalyist_Sydney_3_YoE.pdf (Adding Country name in resume file name better approach to filter quickly as per the Job requirement )
Creating a resume and resume file names should be prepared in a good way, it is the first interaction with the hiring team. Most of the resumes are not selected or opened or screened because of resume name, cover letter format, and Subject line, resume format.
If the wrong resume file name is received, it increases efforts to filter the right resume as per the Job requirements, sometimes missed the resume that might be the right candidate for the job, so it doesn't come in the missed category. Always use the right file name to make sure the screening of the resume is complete.
Wrong way e.g.
1. Jane_Doe.pdf (This Might be the right name of file but sometimes if HR has multiple resumes then less chances would be there of proper screening )
2. Resume.pdf (Wrong way to share resume just like that)
3. Marketing_Specialist_1.pdf
4. MarketingSpecialist_JaneDoe_Resume.doc (Try to Ignore doc file sharing with HR for screening, Content Format mismatch some times and it impacts on details of the resume, and messy resume details won't help to understand HR full details of the candidate. Sometimes HR puts some effort into making it proper. So Please avoid sharing doc files while attaching your resume in email, PDF will be always a better approach)
5. Taylor Swift.pdf (Resume file should not have space between text)
6. Ariana_Grande CV (1).pdf (File name should not have a copy number, it shows that you made changes and shared the file with the same format without removing the copy number.)
7. Salena_Gomaz_Resume_march.pdf (Don't add the month name in a file name for your resume)
8. Salena_2024_Resume.pdf (Don't add the year in your file)
9. Android.pdf
10. 2024.pdf (do not send resume only with year mentioned)
11. CV.pdf (Recently we received multiple resumes with only written CV, What to say on this even no cover letter and no Proper Subject. May be qualifications match with Job description but it's hard to manage)
12. Aishleeeee_H.pdf (Now the person's name is Aishle but adding some fancy way doesn't attract HR in the screening round in this way, Candaiate should not use some fancy way in the resume file name.)
There are so many other resume file names that the human resources team receives daily and misses or skips many resumes while screening. So be careful while sharing your resume.
Generally, notice sometimes candidates forget to attach a resume while applying, so always attach your resume very first then add a subject, cover letter, and body.
As per the resume received at our end, we thought the wrong resume file name happened from the fresher or early bird or lesser experience but Quite Higher experience also does the same and the percentage is high.
For the subject line it is also important to mention a similar way of your experience and tech stack to whom you applying, add a reference to the job and how to get to know Like:
- Get information from a LinkedIn job or LinkedIn Post
- Job Search Platform
- Get Information from in your circle or refer someone
Adding Proper information always helps the HR team to spend time on the resume and changes always increase for getting interview calls this way. These are very minor things that might not be important instead of skills you have specific in tech/field/domain but highlighting your skills in the right way is always important.
We hope that you will try to use resume naming as we suggested above will surely help you in your job hunting.
Thanks
