Introduction
When Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, and five colleagues left OpenAI in 2021 to start a new kind of AI lab, they raised $124 million on a vision, responsible AI development for humanity's long-term benefit.
Less than five years later, Anthropic has raised over $67 billion, achieved a $380 billion valuation, and grown revenue from near zero to a $14 billion annual run-rate. This is the story of every step along the way.
Every Funding Round, Start to Finish
Seed / Series A: May 2021 | $124M
Anthropic's founding round, backed by Dustin Moscovitz and Jaan Tallinn among others. Valued the company at roughly $550 million. This capital funded the core research team and the early development of what would become Claude.
Series B: April 2022 | $580M
Led by FTX's Sam Bankman-Fried and James McClave of Jane Street. Pushed the valuation to approximately $4 billion and allowed the team to scale infrastructure and research significantly.
Series C: May 2023 | $450M
Led by Spark Capital with participation from Google, Zoom, Salesforce, and Menlo Ventures. Valued at roughly $5 billion. This round coincided with Claude's first public launch and marked Anthropic's entry into the commercial AI market.
Series C Extension: June - August 2023 | ~$1.25B
Google deepened its commitment (totaling $2B across tranches), joined by SK Telecom, Buckhill Capital, and Sapphire Ventures. Valuation held at approximately $5 billion.
Series D: September - October 2023 | $1.25B
Amazon announced up to $4 billion in investment (first tranche here), with Google adding another $500 million. Valuation jumped to $18.1 billion. The Amazon deal also brought deep AWS integration, making Claude available natively on Bedrock.
Series D Extension: January 2024 | $750M
Led by Menlo Ventures, with Qualcomm and Saudi Arabia's MIS joining. Valuation remained around $18 billion.
Series D Extension: March 2024 | $2.75B
Amazon completing its original $4 billion commitment. A strategic deepening of the foundational cloud partnership.
Series D Extension: July 2024 | ~$1.25B
Additional late-stage capital including DAMAC Group. Pushed the implied valuation toward $30 billion.
Strategic Round: November 2024 | $4B
Amazon's second major tranche, doubling its total stake to approximately $8 billion. Reinforced AWS as Anthropic's primary cloud infrastructure partner.
Series E: March 2025 | $3.5B
Led by Lightspeed Venture Partners ($1B commitment), with Bessemer, Cisco, D1 Capital, Fidelity, General Catalyst, and Jane Street. Valuation reached $61.5 billion, a 3× jump from just months prior.
Strategic Investment: March 2025 | $1B
Google's third investment, bringing its total commitment to over $4.5 billion. A further signal that the largest technology companies view Anthropic as a long-term strategic partner, not just a portfolio bet.
U.S. Department of Defense Contract: July 2025 | $200M
Anthropic was awarded a $200 million government contract, making Claude the first frontier AI model deployed for classified U.S. government missions, enabled through Palantir and AWS infrastructure.
Series F: September 2025 | $13B
The largest AI funding round recorded to that point. Led by ICONIQ Capital, with Fidelity, Lightspeed, Coatue, GIC, BlackRock, Blackstone, and Qatar Investment Authority participating. Post-money valuation: $183 billion. Run-rate revenue had already crossed $5 billion.
NVIDIA + Microsoft Strategic Deal: November 2025 | Up to $15B
NVIDIA and Microsoft announced a combined strategic investment of up to $15 billion. As part of the deal, Anthropic committed to purchasing $30 billion in compute, locking in the infrastructure pipeline for the next generation of frontier models.
Series F Extension: January 2026
Sequoia Capital joined the round. Pre-money valuation reached $350 billion, setting the stage for the Series G close.
Series G: February 12, 2026 | $30B
The second-largest private venture deal in history. Co-led by GIC and Coatue, with D.E. Shaw, Dragoneer, Founders Fund, ICONIQ, and MGX as co-leads. More than 90 investors participated, including NVIDIA, Microsoft, Sequoia, Lightspeed, Accel, Blackstone, TPG, and Goldman Sachs. Post-money valuation: $380 billion.
Revenue Growth, Year by Year
2022 | ~$10 million
Anthropic's first year of commercial operations. Revenue was minimal, mostly limited API access for select partners. The company was entirely in research and infrastructure mode.
2023 | ~$100 million
Claude launched publicly and the first enterprise contracts were signed. Revenue grew roughly 10× in twelve months, validating that businesses would pay for a safety-focused AI model with genuine capabilities.
2024 | ~$1 billion
Claude 3 launched in March with three tiers Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku, the first frontier model family designed around cost-performance trade-offs. The Amazon partnership brought Claude to tens of thousands of AWS customers. Revenue grew 10× again.
August 2025 | $5 billion run-rate
Claude 4 and Claude Code launched. Claude Code, the agentic coding tool, became the fastest-growing product in Anthropic's history. The run-rate crossed $5 billion, a 5× increase in under eight months.
February 2026 | $14 billion run-rate
Anthropic's current run-rate as of the Series G close. Claude Code alone contributes an estimated $2.5 billion or more. Anthropic has now achieved 10× annual revenue growth for three consecutive years. There are over 300,000 business customers using Claude across the API and claude.ai.
